Flat walls make everything else look expensive

Plastering is the layer everything else sits on. A wall that is out of true shows up in every skirting joint, every tile run and every strip of wallpaper. We plaster to a finish that takes decoration cleanly and stays crack-free.

Plastering

Skimming, dry lining and solid plaster

For most refurbishments a two-coat skim over existing sound plaster is the right answer. Where walls are blown, hollow or badly out of level, dry lining on dabs gives a straighter finish and a chance to add insulation at the same time.

Older properties often need traditional solid plaster, and in listed or period buildings that can mean lime rather than gypsum. Lime lets a solid wall breathe; sealing it up with modern gypsum and plastic paint is a common cause of damp appearing somewhere else in the building.

External render, when the job needs it

Some plastering jobs continue outside the wall: a render repair alongside an internal skim, or a full re-render where the existing coat has failed. We use silicone and through-coloured systems where a wall needs to shed water and stay clean, and traditional sand-and-cement where that is the right specification.

Cracked or hollow render is not just cosmetic, it lets water sit against the masonry behind it. We hammer-test existing render, cut back anything that has failed, and make good properly rather than skimming over a problem that will reappear.

How it runs

Our approach to plastering

  1. 01

    Assess the substrate

We tap-test walls to find hollow sections and check how far out of level things are. That determines whether you need a skim, an overboard, or a full hack-off.

  2. 02

    Prepare and board

Failed material comes off, backgrounds are treated for suction, beads go on and boards are fixed where needed.

  3. 03

    Plaster and cure

Two coats, trowelled up to a flat polished finish. We then tell you how long to leave it before decorating — rushing this is what causes flashing and peeling.
