Posts are what fail, so that is where we spend the effort

Fence panels almost never fail first. Posts do — they rot at ground level or work loose in soft ground, and then the panels go. Getting the posts right is most of the job and most of the reason a fence lasts fifteen years instead of five.

Fencing

Posts, depth and drainage

A post should go into the ground by roughly a quarter to a third of its above-ground height, set in concrete with the base drained rather than sitting in a bucket of water. A post set in a hole that holds water rots at exactly the point where the leverage is highest.

For exposed sites and taller fences we use concrete posts or spurs, which outlast timber indefinitely at the ground line and let you replace panels without redoing the whole run.

Boundaries and heights

Fences generally need planning permission above two metres, or above one metre where they adjoin a highway used by vehicles. Before we start we also establish whose boundary it actually is — replacing a neighbour's fence without asking is a common and avoidable dispute.

Ground rarely runs level. On a slope, panels are either stepped or raked, and which one suits depends on the gradient and the style. We will show you both so the finished line looks deliberate.

How it runs

Our approach to fencing

  1. 01

    Measure and confirm

We measure the run, check levels and gradient, and confirm the boundary and any height restrictions before ordering.

  2. 02

    Set posts

Old fence removed, posts set to depth in concrete and left to cure before any load goes on them.

  3. 03

    Fit and finish

Gravel boards, panels or boarding fitted, gates hung and adjusted, and all waste taken away.
