A floor is only as good as what's underneath it

Flooring problems are rarely the flooring. A board that lifts, a laminate that clicks apart at the seam, or a floor that feels hollow underfoot is almost always a subfloor that was not flat, dry or prepared before the new floor went down. We deal with the subfloor as carefully as the finish that sits on it.

Flooring

Choosing the right material for the room

Engineered wood has a real timber wear layer bonded to a stable plywood base, so it copes with humidity and temperature changes better than solid wood and can be laid over underfloor heating. Solid wood looks and feels the same but moves more, and can be sanded and refinished several times over its life. Laminate is harder-wearing and cheaper but cannot be refinished, and LVT and vinyl are genuinely waterproof, which wood and laminate are not.

The right material depends on the room, not just the look. Kitchens and bathrooms need something that can actually get wet; living spaces suit engineered or solid wood; and where rooms run into each other, we plan the transitions and thresholds so the floor reads as one continuous space rather than a join in the wrong place.

Subfloor preparation and fitting

Before anything is fitted we check the subfloor for level and test it for moisture. Laying wood or laminate over a damp screed is the single most common cause of a floor lifting or gapping months later. Timber and laminate are left to acclimatise in the room for several days before fitting, so the material has already done its moving before it is fixed down.

Underfloor heating changes the specification: not every floor covering is compatible, and where it is, the flooring has to be fitted in a way that lets heat through evenly rather than in stripes. We also choose the fixing method (floating, glued or secret-nailed) to suit the material and the room, which affects how the floor sounds and feels underfoot as much as how long it lasts.

How it runs

Our approach to flooring

  1. 01

    Survey and specify

We check the subfloor, test for moisture, and help you choose a material that suits the room: not just the look, but the wear, water exposure and heating underneath it.

  2. 02

    Prepare the subfloor

Levelling compound, damp-proofing or new ply as needed, and timber or laminate is left to acclimatise in the room before fitting. This stage is invisible in the finished floor and is what stops it moving later.

  3. 03

    Fit and finish

The floor is fitted with the correct expansion gaps and fixing method for the material, then skirting, thresholds and trims are completed to a clean line.
